What we have done recently:
With membership support over the months we installed a new exhibit on “The Segregated Department,” a history of Engine 11 that highlights the achievements and the work life of those brave fire fighters. We worked with the Philadelphia International Airport to install an exhibit on the history of firefighting in Philadelphia and with Independence Seaport Museum. We are now working on new exhibits for our lobby area, highlighting some very special new artifacts, a piece of stone from the Pentagon demolished on 9/11/2001 and some soil from Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the site of the downed flight #93. These special pieces will be highlighted in a temporary exhibit that will complement our permanent 9/11 exhibit honoring the fallen New York firefighters.
We sponsored a muster at the Fire Academy that brought together volunteer and paid firefighters from across the region to share information and was an opportunity for the general public to learn more about firefighting, health and safety issues and fire prevention issues. We also hosted our annual firefighter of the year and paramedic of the year award ceremonies.
We continue to devote extra attention to preservation and were fortunate enough to be granted funding for a Conservation Assessment from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This allowed an historic preservation architect and objects conservator to come in and assess our collections and make recommendations for future care. This will be our blueprint for preservation for the future.
